A taxi made by Chinese electric car maker BYD caught fire after an accident in Shenzhen last week, killing three people. The BYD taxi, one of the company's E6 all-electric cars, was hit at the back by a speedy Nissan GT-R sports car and caught fire immediately. The driver and two passengers were not able to escape and died inside the burning car. The drunken GT-R driver with 3 hot chicks onboard survived from the crash. The crash marks the first time an all-electric car catching fire has resulted in casualties. The entire event was recorded by witnesses, with photos and video clip being posted on the internet ...

So about that Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE ... We know it's cleared Customs, following that pesky International Trade Commission review. And we know preorders have and are still being delivered, but apparently the bulk of the phones are still in transit. Sprint this morning has given us a bit of a non-update update, which reads thusly:
While Sprint customers who pre-ordered their HTC EVO 4G LTE received their device last week, Sprint continues to wait for our full inventory from HTC.
We recently learned that HTC devices have been released by U.S. Customs. We expect shipments of HTC EVO 4G LTE to enter the U.S. in the next few days. An exact availability date for HTC EVO 4G LTE will be communicated as soon as possible.
We’ll continue updating this post as we have new information to share.
Thank you everybody for your interest and continued patience.
So in-store availability is still up in the air. Soon as we know something, you will, too.

LG has announced on their Korean site that the Optimus LTE, the Optimus LTE Tag, and the Optimus Vu: will be receiving the Ice Cream Sandwich updates starting June 4. Coming with the update will be a new UI layer for all the devices, a new feature called kwiknote that promises access to a note app from any screen, ad the Vu: will get a feature that allows apps to run side-by-side on the 4:3 screen.
Of course there's no word on carrier involvement, and nothing about LG's other offerings. We're not really surprised considering this came from the Korea office, but we have to mention it. Hopefully the ball is now rolling and we'll be seeing ICS on more LG devices before it's too late to matter.

Apple liked it so much, it's decided to let the Nest Thermostat share shelf-space in its bricks-and-mortar stores and online. Following rumors that Tony Fadell's latest project would appear at his former employer's store, it's now been confirmed with an online listing. Following some brief downtime on the Cupertino corp's retail site, the unit is set to retail for $250. Aside from sharing some design DNA, the thermostat unit can also be controlled from iPhones, iPads, iPods and Macs -- we presume that Android functionality is still there. Those that like their summers extra comfortable can hit the store link below.

We had quite the time here at the 2011 edition of D, and if you're fully caught up with last year's shenanigans, it's time to get to work. And by "work," we mean listening in to the opening keynote of DX. The 2012 conference is kicking off in earnest on May 29th, and it'll be Apple CEO Tim Cook taking the stage alongside hosts Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher. By our calculations, this looks to be his first offsite interview outside of the financial realm, and we'll be liveblogging the whole of it from the Terranea Resort in Rancho Palos Verdes, California. The action's scheduled to kick off around 6:15PM PT (that's 9:15PM for you folks on the right coast; 3:15PM in Tahiti), and you can follow along just past the break. As to what'll be discussed? Just guessing here, but in no particular order: Samsung, intellectual property, Foxconn, iOS, earnings, lawsuits, iPad, acquisitions and cold, hard cash.

"Join us as we introduce the truly incredible Next Transformations." The message delivered by Asus in a teaser trailer ahead of their Computex 2012 showcase in Taipei. Computex is right around the corner, and any big trade show needs some product teasers to whet everybody's appetites.
Other than this, and blatant cloud talk, there really isn't anything to go on. Nor, for that matter is there anything Android related to go on. At the point all we have is pure, un-bridled speculation. But, given Asus' record, it does leave us wondering if we're about to be treated to some more goodies from the Taiwanese OEM.
Remember too, back at MWC we got a hands on with the Transformer Pad Infinity, which is still to make it to market. So, that could be involved in some way. Or, we could get something completely new and breathtaking. Either way this is Asus, so it's definitely one to keep watch over.

Should you have the impulse to turn your dumb display into a full-fledged Smart TV, LG has revealed the second iteration of its Smart TV Upgrader box is ready to hit the marketplace. The original ST600 box was released last year, and this new SP820 was announced earlier this year at CES. It adds LG's Smart TV experience complete with Magic gesture and voice controlled remote to any HDTV with an HDMI input. There's access to both 2D and 3D streaming content from the internet, DLNA, Wi-Fi Direct and any new apps LG rolls out for its platform. Similar to Apple's TV box and the Roku family, it's a palm sized device intended for easy installations. An even smaller, stripped down SP520 version that supports fewer apps is already on shelves with a $120 MSRP, although sale prices range from $80 to $99. The SP is shipping in June for 199,000 won ($169 US), while there's no word yet on a US release, we'll probably wait to see if LG can add enough apps to compete as a third party before jumping in.

We can be completely honest here, right? With all the phones that tend to come across our desks, things can, on occasion, become a bit of a grind, especially when you've reviewed the fifth or sixth version of a manufacturer's flagship model. Specs change a little, but it's largely the same experience. That's when this job can become work.
"Oh, shut up, Phil. I'd kill for your job." And I wouldn't blame you. Indeed, it's why I travel in unmarked sedans with no fewer than two Bulgarian bodyguards (and occasionally a chase car, depending on the neighborhood).
But those long days of writing about a phone for what seems the Nth time is also why it's been refreshing over the past month or so to see the excitement over Sprint's HTC EVO 4G LTE. I dare say the anticipation has been greater than even the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. (That can't be right, can it?) Sure, the phone itself is what's important, but it's the Sprint fans that make these high-profile releases so much fun. I'm not a Sprint guy. I like the company a lot. I love sitting in the same room as its execs. The PR folks we work with are top-notch. Unfortunately, it's never had a good enough network experience for me to have an account. Hopefully that will change with Network Vision in the next year or so.
But those of you who are on Sprint, boy, howdy, you're a breed unto your own. You don't see this sort of fanaticism on AT&T. It's there on T-Mobile, but to a lesser extent, not nearly as vocal. More of "Yeah, it's a really good network -- with a really cool spokesmodel -- and some really good phones. It's just not big enough." Verizon's the 800-pound gorilla in the room, but, again, it just doesn't have the same sort of excitement you get with a major Sprint launch.
What's taken me so long in getting our EVO review done? Life, for one. It happens. But I've also been spending more time in our forums lately (for better or for worse). That's where you really learn what people want to know about a phone. Hell, it's where I go to learn more about a phone. It's amazing the little features (or, yes, nuisances) that you might not notice on the first, fourth or even fifth go-around.
The point is, you Sprint fans out there -- you crazy, fanatic Sprint lovers -- you've added some serious fun to the past couple weeks with the launch of the EVO.
Here's to hoping we get to do it all over again in the coming months with the Galaxy S III.

The last time we saw Oppo's 6.65mm-thick smartphone, it was playing hard to get: we didn't see much more than its svelte profile. Oppo is now being a little more forthcoming, both officially and otherwise. It's now teasing the device as the Finder, and some escaped details explain just how it's getting to that Ascend P1 S-busting dimension as well as where it sits in the smartphone pantheon. TGBus understands the Finder should use a familiar-sounding 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus screen -- much thinner than an LCD -- as well as a dual-core 1.5GHz processor of an unspecified make and the virtually pre-requisite 8-megapixel rear and 1.3-megapixel front cameras. The lot should run on a customized version of Android 4.0. If all goes to the still somewhat unofficial plan, the Finder could be ready for pre-orders on June 6th at a not-insignificant ¥3,999 ($631) off-contract. We're mostly waiting on in-store dates and the possibility of snapping one up without a long flight to China.

Cabler Cox Communications joined in on the live TV streaming to iPad craze by releasing its own Cox TV Connect app late last year, and recently updated it to version 1.1.0. With the upgrade comes the new look shown above, so while it originally featured a more... unique look for TV listings (as seen after the break) this version has programming sorted in the traditional grid-style guide shown above. Also mentioned is the ability for users to view and sort TV listings for all channels, although they'll still need the separate Cox Mobile Connect apps for things like DVR scheduling. Bump has been hard at work updating their application to bring a new functionality to users. Today, they've unveiled what exactly they've been up to and to put it plainly -- it's pretty awesome. The concept is simple really. You have photos on your device and the desire to transfer them to your computer. Now you can with just a bump. No wires, cables or fuss. How does it work?
Starting today, everyone who uses Bump can go to http://bu.mp on their computer web browser, select photos in the Bump app on their phone, and gently bump the spacebar on their computer. Voila! Photos instantly appear on the computer. From there, people have the option of saving to their hard drive or getting a short link to share with friends on Facebook, Twitter, email or IM. There’s no software to install or registration required – it’s how technology should work.
Sure, there is a few other apps out there that will transfer photos to your computer from your phone. Dropbox being one choice that works but if you're not already invested into those other solutions, Bump might be just exactly what you are looking for. I tested it out quite a few times on different devices and worked each and every time. Give it a go and let us know what you think.

Drops, shocks, heavy vibrations, dust, water and temperatures in the extremes -- just the kind of punishment you'd expect a DRS Armor slab to put up with, and the firm's latest do so without the briefcase-like look. With MIL-STD 810G certification and an IP65 rating, the 7-inch multi-touch slates can withstand some rough and tumble -- though there's no word if they can pass the tesla coil benchmark. At 1.3 pounds, the Android 3.2-loaded X7ad squeezes out eight hours of battery life with a 1GHz dual core Tegra 2 processor. Its Windows-minded doppelganger, the X7et, holds a six-hour charge, sports an Atom Z670 processor and tips the scales at just under 1.5 pounds. If the chunkier look strikes your fancy, the 12.1 inch X12kb has you covered -- though at 5.5 pounds, it's the lightest MIL-STD-810G certified convertible tablet currently available. The swivel screened slate has up to eight hours of battery life, a Core i5 560UMCPU processor, a polarized LCD glass display, a spillproof keyboard and touchpad in addition to a one-click stealth mode that disables light and sound for "covert operations." With GPS, WiFi and Gobi Wireless Broadband options, all three of these are ready for missions at home and abroad, however you might need that stealth function to find out the (currently unspecified) pricing.

The briefing states that the DCAC's purpose will be "to invent technology that will let police more readily eavesdrop on Internet and wireless communications" (initially focusing on VoIP services, social networks, and wireless communication mediums) . Via a prepared statement, the FBI explained that the unit's modus operandi will be to "assist federal, state and local law enforcement with electronic surveillance capabilities." Congress has appropriated over $54 million for "lawful electronic surveillance" in fiscal year 2012; the DCAC has been earmarked just north of $8 million from that pie. Bad news for Xperia Play owners today. Sony Mobile has confirmed that the planned Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich for the PlayStation-certified smartphone has been canned, and that the device will remain on Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Sony explains that the decision stems from concerns over stability and compatibility, particularly where the Xperia Play's gaming features are concerned.
So there'll be more than a few sad pandas among the Xperia Play-owning masses today. Not least due to the fact that the entire 2011 Xperia line-up was previously promised ICS, and Sony published an early beta ROM for the Play a few months back to show its development progress. Nevertheless, we'll admit it makes sense to stick with a working OS, rather than forcibly updating users to something that's going to break gaming compatibility.
However, despite the problems affecting the Xperia Play, other 2011 Xperia phones remain on track to receive an update to Android 4.0.4. Sony's confirmed that the Xperia arc, Xperia neo, Xperia mini, Xperia mini pro, Xperia pro, Xperia active and Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman will begin to receive 4.0.4 as an optional update through the PC Companion app from next week. What's more, Xperia arc S, Xperia ray and Xperia neo V users currently running Android 4.0.3 will get an update to 4.0.4 around the same time.
In other Xperia ICS news, Sony reports that the Xperia S update is on track for late June, followed by the Xperia P and Xperia U sometime in the third quarter.

T-Mobile's USA proposed union with AT&T might have gone down in flames, but that isn't precluding the boss of parent company Deutsche Telekom, René Obermann, from exploring tie-ups in the future. He's now telling investors that the company won't "exclude any option" for its US carrier, up to and including mergers with others. Before you worry that your One S might lose its luster through an outside takeover, though, the CEO has said it's "unlikely" that DT will sell T-Mobile outright. There aren't any coded messages about possible merger targets, either, even if rumors of a MetroPCS deal have percolated elsewhere. Most of the present focus is simply on reworking and trimming the company to get it running at full efficiency in the face of some very stiff competition; Carly can keep wearing that T-Mobile magenta for awhile yet.

NVIDIA, likely feeling the sting of not having an LTE presence on some of the biggest carriers in the US, announced this morning that the Icera 410 modem has been validated for use on AT&T's network. This particular chipset utilizes the carrier's particular brand of Long-Term Evolution -- in addition to HSPA+, UMTS and 2G -- which means that we should see Icera-powered 4G devices on AT&T's lineup sometime this year. NVIDIA has promised we'll see Tegra 3 LTE utilizing "partners' baseband processors" before we ring in 2013, so we're hoping this bit of news can help the company live up to its word. The press release is all yours to read after the break.
